Dhanyagiri (Wardan)

The story of the demon whose vast heap of paddy turned to earth and became Wardan (Dhanyagiri).

Dhanyagiri (Wardan)

Long ago a greedy demon lived in the region of Shonitpur. Over the years he had saved up and piled a vast heap of paddy in front of his house. As he grew older his bodily strength declined, and he thought of spending the rest of his life in comfort.

One day he began to reckon in his mind: "Will this paddy I have piled up be enough to eat for my whole old age, or not? Might the grain run out and I be left to die of hunger?"

He divided the heap of paddy among the days of his likely remaining lifespan. His greedy and suspicious mind saw that even for one meal a day this grain would fall short.

Thinking this, he became extremely worried. "Rather than die of hunger in old age, it is better to save the grain by not eating today's meal while there is still a little strength in my body," he thought.

His whole day passed in such worry and greed. When evening fell, he went to sleep hungry in his greed to save one meal's grain.

But the next morning he never woke; his life left him in his sleep. Meanwhile that vast heap of paddy he had saved up slowly turned into soil and stone. That great mound of earth in the middle of the field came to be called Wardan, or Dhanyagiri, which stands even today as a witness to man's blind greed and worry.

Note: These are traditional Nepali folk tales (kimbadanti), passed down orally through generations. They may or may not reflect actual historical events, but they are told and believed as part of Nepal's cultural heritage.
