What is Swar Siddhanta?
Naming your child based on Swar Siddhanta can give positive results in the growth and development of the child. The most common practice to name a child is based on the quarter of the constellation (Nakshatra) occupied by the radical Moon — that is, the Moon's position at the time of the birth.
Vedic astrology divides the zodiac into 27 parts known as constellations or Nakshatras. Each Nakshatra is further divided into four parts known as Padas. Knowing only the birth Nakshatra is not enough to name the child — one needs both the Nakshatra and the Pada to choose the most suitable Swar out of the 108 Swar groups.
Significance of Swar Siddhanta
Vedic astrology has given significant importance to Swar Siddhanta. In Hinduism, deities are propitiated with the power of Swar. Sound is one of the most effective energies playing an important role in the universe — even all Mantras are based on Swar Siddhanta.

How to use this table
Find the Nakshatra in which the Moon was placed at the time of birth and then locate the pada. For example, if the Moon was in the first pada of Ashwini the name should begin with चु (Chu), and in the third pada of Rohini it should begin with वी (Vee).
If you want to know the Nakshatra and Pada for your loved one, create a Janma Kundali — it shows the Moon's Nakshatra and pada for any birth date, time and place, so you can pick the matching Swar from the table above.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about Swar Siddhanta and naming a child by Nakshatra pada.
Q:What is Swar Siddhanta?
Swar Siddhanta is the Vedic method of naming a person from the syllable of the Nakshatra pada in which the Moon was placed at birth. A name that begins with that syllable (the Naam Rashi) is believed to support the growth and development of the child.
Q:Which letter should my baby's name start with?
It depends on the Janma Nakshatra and pada. If the Moon was in the second pada of Bharani, the name should start with लू (Loo); if it was in the fourth pada of Revati, with ची (Chee). The table above lists the syllable for all 27 Nakshatras and all four padas.
Q:How do I find the birth Nakshatra and pada?
The birth Nakshatra and pada come from the Moon's exact longitude in the birth chart. Each Nakshatra covers 13° 20′, so the 27 Nakshatras make 108 padas of 3° 20′ each. Our Janma Kundali tool calculates the Moon's Nakshatra and pada from the date, time and place of birth.
Q:Does the Swar letter differ for boys and girls?
No. The pada syllable is the same for both; only the name chosen from that syllable differs. Two children born in the same pada of the same Nakshatra share the same starting letter.
Q:Is a name without the matching Swar a problem?
Not necessarily. The Swar is a traditional guide, not a rule of fate, and many families choose a name for meaning or family reasons. Following the pada syllable is regarded as a supportive practice, especially in the Nepali and Indian naming tradition.
