Bhimsensthan

The story of Bhimsensthan, where Bhimsen appeared in the form of a porter and returned to Dolakha.

Bhimsensthan

The king of Dolakha gave his beautiful princess in marriage to a young man of a noble family of Kathmandu. After the wedding was over, the bridal party was sent off toward Kathmandu with the dowry and gifts loaded up.

The goods were so many that even after engaging a great many porters, one large load still remained to be carried. Then an old man from Dolakha himself took up that load and set off for Kathmandu along with the bridal party.

That old porter appeared extremely lazy — he did nothing but eat and pass the days sleeping. When the time came to plant paddy in Kathmandu, the host sent the porters out to dig the fields. While the other porters worked all day long, that old man would lie basking in the sun.

In the evening the porter-master saw the still-barren field and scolded him, saying: "Tomorrow morning is the planting! One way or another, this vast field must be dug up by tonight!"

The old porter made no protest. But the next morning, that vast field which would have taken hundreds of labourers months to finish was found completely dug and ready for planting, all in a single night.

Seeing this wondrous miracle, everyone understood — that old man was none other than Bhimsen of Dolakha himself.

After his secret was revealed, Bhimsen said: "I had come disguised as an old porter to see the sights of Kathmandu. Now I shall return to Dolakha itself. On my way back, wherever I rest, establish my temple there."

Bhimsen walked back to Dolakha, and at the places where he set his foot, magnificent Bhimsen temples (Bhimsensthan) were built, where even today merchants worship Bhimsen especially, for the growth of their trade.

Note: These are traditional Nepali folk tales (kimbadanti), passed down orally through generations. They may or may not reflect actual historical events, but they are told and believed as part of Nepal's cultural heritage.
